My entire life I’ve been framing the world through a camera. What began with a passion for still photography became the defining pursuit of my life: a lifelong devotion to making images and telling stories through them. Cinematography and filmmaking opened new possibilities for that passion, expanding a fascination that has only grown stronger with time.

I’ve always considered myself a student of cinematography and photography. I’ve learned as much from the films of Gordon Willis, Haskell Wexler or Christopher Dolye as from the photographs of Saul Leiter, Robert Frank and William Claxton. Painting, sculpture, jazz, and classical music have been equally important influences, enriching my appreciation of light, form, composition, rhythm, and the power of art to evoke emotion.

I’m endlessly moved by the ephemeral beauty of natural light, by its ability to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary. I’m drawn to the geometry and order of architecture, the sculptural beauty and physical power of a machine, the beauty and expressiveness of the human figure, the relationships between people and their surroundings, and the fleeting gestures and unexpected moments that reveal something beyond the obvious. I’m as excited by images carefully constructed as by those discovered in an instant and gone just as quickly.

My work has taken me around the world and given me the opportunity to collaborate with many remarkable directors, artists, and technicians. I live for the process of filmmaking: the exchange of ideas, the problem-solving, and the collective effort of bringing a creative story to life from nothing. I find as much satisfaction in the demands of a large production as I do in the freedom of working alone with a camera.

What excites me most are the places I haven’t yet seen, the people I haven’t met, the stories I haven’t told, and the images still ahead of me.
